# Download a backup

> Download all the data of a workspace as one JSON file, and see what the file holds.

A backup is all the data of one workspace in one JSON file. Owners and admins download it from Settings. This page
tells how, and what the file holds.

## Before you begin

- Only owners and admins export a workspace.
- A workspace exports 3 times an hour at most.
- A staff member of Troopy who acts as you cannot export.

## Download a backup

1. Open **Settings** > **Workspace**, then the **Backup** tab.
2. Read **What the file holds**.
3. Select **Export JSON**. The browser saves the file.

A big workspace takes some time. If the export stops before the end of the file, the page says "The export stopped
before the end of the file. Try again." A file that stopped never looks whole: export it again.

## What the file holds

| In the file | Stays out |
| ----------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------ |
| The settings of the workspace, and its people | The vault, keys, tokens and passwords |
| Teammates, with their files, routines, triggers, rules and skills | The About you files and private notes of other people |
| Conversations, the troop chat, drafts and approvals | The contents of files and images |
| Tasks, projects, docs with their history, research and canvases | Runs, caches, meters and notifications |
| Email, the CRM, Customers, surveys and Analytics | The items of a canvas that private mode hides from you |
| Incidents, tests, disputes and support conversations | The rest of the organization |

The file names the people who reach the workspace, and no other person of the organization. Each sealed value stays
out, so the file holds no secret.

## Export with an API key

`GET /api/export` gives the same file to a key that has each read scope but `vault:read`. See
[API reference](/docs/api).
