# Ask your users with surveys

> Show a short survey in your product, start the next round, and read the answers and the PMF score.

A survey asks the users of your product a few questions, in a card on the pages of the product. The answers go to
Customers. A vote counts in the PMF score, and each written answer is a piece of feedback. This page tells how to make
a survey, show it, and read what users said.

## Before you begin

- The pages of your product load the tracking script of Analytics, and the product identifies each user. See
  [Set up website analytics](/docs/analytics).
- Owners and admins make, change and show surveys. Everyone reads them and their answers.
- Surveys is a product. A person sees it only when it has the product.

## How a survey reaches users

- A survey shows only to a user that the product identified, with `identify` in the tracking script.
- One survey shows at a time. To show another survey stops the survey that showed.
- After a user answers any survey, that user gets no survey for 7 days.
- A user who closes a survey gets none for 7 days. Three closes in a month end the surveys for that month.
- `data-disable-surveys="true"` on the script tag keeps the surveys off a page.

## Make a survey

1. Open **Surveys** from **Products**, then select **New survey**.
2. **Start with a template**:

| Template | What it asks |
| ---------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Product-market fit** | The score question, then who the product is for, its main benefit, and what to make better. |
| **Product feedback** | What users like, what they dislike, and what to build next. Each user answers it one time. |
| **Blank** | Write your own questions. |

3. The survey page opens. Change its name and its questions.

## The parts of a survey

| Part | What it holds |
| ----------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **What it asks** | **The score question**, on or off, and up to 5 open questions. |
| **Who gets it** | **Every user**: each user that your product identifies, from the first day. Or **Users who know your product**. |
| **How often** | **One time**, or again after some days, so the answers stay current. |
| **What your users see** | The card as your users see it. Step through it. Nothing here is kept. |

**The score question** asks how a user would feel without the product: **Very disappointed**, **Somewhat
disappointed** or **Not disappointed**. Its words are fixed, so the score means the same in each survey.

**Users who know your product** began 7 days ago or more. They also use it steadily, or used it 3 days in the last 30.

## Show a survey in your product

1. Save your changes.
2. Select **Show in my product**. The survey shows in your product now, in the place of the survey that showed.
3. To stop it, select **Stop**.

A survey with no question cannot show. On Pro, the card shows "Powered by Troopy". Max and Ultra show no badge.

## The next round

A user answers a survey one time. For the next round, select **Copy** on the survey. The copy keeps the questions, so
the answers of each question stay together.

## Read the answers

The list of **Surveys** shows each survey with who **Saw it**, who **Answered**, and its **Score**. On the page of a
survey:

- **What they wrote** shows the written answers, by question (`?question=`).
- Each written answer is also a piece of feedback in Customers. See
  [Understand your customers](/docs/customers).
- The PMF page of Customers shows the share of users who would be very disappointed, from every survey with the score
  question.

The words of users show as text. A user id is no secret, and any page can identify any user. Read an answer as a
signal, not as a proof.

## Delete a survey

Select **Delete this survey**. It stops, and its turns end. What users wrote stays as feedback.

A workspace keeps 50 surveys.
