Get answers with Research
Ask a question, let the Researcher search the web, and read a report whose sources Troopy checked.
Research holds the questions that the Researcher answers with a report. The Researcher searches the web in its own browser, reads the pages, and writes a report. Troopy checks every source of the report. This page tells how to ask, read and keep a report up to date.
Before you begin
- Research needs a Researcher in the troop. If you have none, the page shows Hire the Researcher.
- Research is a product. A person sees it only when it has the product. See Invite people and choose their roles.
Ask a question
- Open Research from Products.
- Type What do you want to find out?.
- Optional: type What will you decide with it?. The answer helps the Researcher keep to what matters.
- Pick How deep. Quick reads a few sources in a few minutes.
- Or pick Thorough. It reads up to about 20 sources, in up to half an hour.
- Select Start research.
The research shows under Researching now, with the orb while the Researcher works. Before it starts, it shows Waiting to start.
How the Researcher works
- It searches with Google, then Bing, then DuckDuckGo, in its own browser. It searches the news too.
- A quick research has 4 searches. A thorough research has 12.
- It reads the sites that its searches found, for the rest of the run.
- It cites each source of the report as [1], [2] and so on.
- Troopy checks each source before it saves: a web page must be one that the run read. The quote of an interview must be its exact words.
When it needs you, the research shows It asked you something. Answer on its task.
Read the report
When the report is ready, the research moves to Ready for you. Open it.
- The answer is the first paragraph of the report, in a well.
- The sources are beside the report. Each number in the text points to its source, with its title and its site.
- The report is a doc of kind research. You write in it as in each doc, with History, comments and a guest link. See Write and share docs.
Review the report
Under the report, Does this answer it? has two answers:
- Looks good: the report is done.
- Send it back: say What should change?. The Researcher revises the report and brings it back to you.
Ask a follow-up
Select Ask a follow-up to ask the next question on the same research. The follow-up keeps the first report as its start.
Keep it up to date
Turn on Keep it up to date on a research. Each week, the Researcher runs the research again with the newest pages, and saves a new version of the report. A research that you do not keep up to date says Not kept up to date.
Add a report to the brain
Select Add to Brain to keep the report as knowledge of the troop. A rewrite of the summary of a doc in the brain waits for your yes.
The library
The Library lists every research, with its sources and its date. Use Search research to find one. Delete deletes a research and its report.
